ANZ markets staff will have little trouble remembering the day they moved into their new dealing room.

Last week, in a momentous period they dubbed the "Lehman Brothers week", about 400 staff said goodbye to the 16-year-old dealing room at 530 Collins Street, setting up in a shiny, split-level affair at the bank's headquarters in Queen Street.

The dealing room, believed to be the city's biggest, has been decorated with a Melbourne-inspired theme: "In the grid."

Along with Bloomberg computer screens and high-tech communication systems, there are burnt orange filing cabinets and bright artwork with images of Southern Cross Station and Federation Square.

"We didn't want to be boring wood-panelled banking, we wanted to be energetic and colourful," said ANZ chief strategy officer, markets, Karen Pringle.

ANZ managing director, markets, Gilles Plante said Melbourne was the biggest of the bank's dealing rooms, which were also in Sydney, Singapore, Wellington and London.

But the redesign was necessary because, over the past three years, ANZ has doubled the revenue generated from its markets business.

Mr Plante said the bank hoped to double the business again, within the next three to five years.
