THE HOARDERS
Hell Gallery, 5a Railway Place, Richmond. hellgallery.blogspot.com. Until Dec 13, Sat noon-6pm.Do you like exhibitions about rubbish? Or are you secretly tired of people telling you the world is ending and that you're basically to blame - what with your 20-minute showers and those secret trips to the tip in your Hummer. Well, don't worry because Matt Morrow's new exhibition is not about your disgusting, wasteful habits - it's about finding beauty in the everyday. In fact, not just in the everyday. In objects that are so common, they have become iconic - the centrepieces of every hard-rubbish tableaux. Filing cabinets with sagging drawers. Old blue mattresses. The Electrolux everyone's Mum has in the garage. Morrow re-creates these familiar objects from ply, and the shapes are perfect. From a distance, they're the real deal. Closer up, they're super rough, like witty approximation. Why create sculpture based on stuff that we already believe is beautiful? Why be cranky about the very rubbish that unites us?
